Felix Rosenqvist and Zach Veach motivated after successful Barber pre-season test
With the opening round of the 2016 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires schedule on the docket for this coming weekend, Belardi Auto Racing is fired up and ready to take a run at their second series championship. The team put in a very successful pre-season test last Saturday at Barber Motorsports Park despite not having enjoyed the same number of test miles as other teams, and Felix Rosenqvist and Zach Veach are highly motivated heading into the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg this weekend. Rosenqvist ended the #WarmUpWeekend test in second overall, and he continues to become more comfortable with the Dallara IL-15. Likewise, despite having a year in the series under his belt (2014), Veach is coming off a full season on the sidelines and is in his first season in the new Indy Lights car. The American worked with the IndyCar Radio Network as their driver analyst last year, so the team is very pleased with the advances that he’d made so far.
“We were behind our competition a little in terms of testing, but our crew did a stellar job with both drivers at Barber Motorsports Park, working on different set-ups, and we made up the ground,” offered Brian Belardi, Team Principal. “We found more speed throughout the day and we ended with a very quick set-up on Felix’s car. Zach improved as well, finishing up P7. I can’t wait to fire things up at St. Petersburg to begin the new season.”
Veach has an Indy Lights victory to his credit at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, coming in 2014, and he will aim to use that experience to allow him to come out of the gate quickly. Rosenqvist is no stranger to temporary street circuit racing, having won the prestigious Macau Grand Prix Formula 3 race in both 2014 and 2015.
The opening round of the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires is set for March 11-13 as part of the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in Florida. Belardi’s drivers will take part in two practice sessions on Friday ahead of Saturday morning qualifying. The first race of the doubleheader is set for 12:55 pm EST on Saturday afternoon. They’ll come back on Sunday morning for Race #2 at 9:45 am.
BELARDI AUTO RACING — DRIVER INFORMATION
Felix Rosenqvist – #14
Hometown: Värnamo, Sweden
Residence: Malmö, Sweden
Sponsors: Karlsson Svensson Projekt, Konstsmide
Driver Input: “I think all tests have been successful in the way that we’ve had loads of running without any major problems except from an engine failure at Homestead. Zach and I have gone through a huge testing program, and we definitely know a lot more now than we did a few weeks ago. It’s always difficult to predict anything before the first qualifying session of the year, and I know I have a huge challenge ahead of me being in a new car, driving on all new circuits and being on a team that is new to me. But the feeling is always positive, and we’ve had so much fun already – and I feel ready to take on St. Pete. To come back to a street circuit is also something I’m really looking forward to after having good memories from Macau, Pau & Norisring in F3.
Zach Veach – #5
Hometown: Stockdale, Ohio
Residence: Zionsville, Indiana
Sponsors: Young Marines, Belardi Auto Racing
Driver Input: “Overall, I’m extremely happy with our test at Barber Motorsports Park. I’m still playing a little catch-up every session, learning the new car and battling old car habits, but Belardi Auto Racing has given me an incredible opportunity for 2016. I’m very confident in myself and in our team going into St. Pete. The last time I raced there, I got my very first Indy Lights victory and I’m looking to try to repeat that come this weekend!
